Before the Light
What you need to know in the messy middle of growing and transformation.
There is a moment in every genuine transformation when the ground beneath you shifts. The old map stops making sense. The landmarks you once relied on — your routines, your coping mechanisms, your familiar identity — begin to dissolve. And for a while, you feel like you are standing in the fog, wondering if you are moving forward at all.
If you are in that fog right now, know this: you are not lost. You are clearing.
The body, the mind, and the spirit do not upgrade like a piece of software. They heal like a wound. And healing is messy. It is exhausting. It is unpredictable. It asks you to sit with discomfort you have spent a lifetime running from.
I have walked this path. I have sat with people in the middle of their own unraveling. And I can tell you with absolute certainty: everything you are experiencing right now is a human experience. You are not broken. You are not weird. You are not doing it wrong. You are simply in the messy middle of becoming. Let’s walk through it together.
Questions
When the body begins to purify
The most common questions that arise as the physical body releases what it has been holding. If you are feeling any of these, you are exactly where you need to be.
- Question 1
Why am I so emotional? I feel like I am falling apart.
- What it feels like
- Sudden tears. Unexplained anger. A wave of grief that seems to come from nowhere. You may find yourself crying at a song, snapping at your partner, or feeling a heaviness in your chest that has no obvious source.
- What is happening
- You are not becoming more emotional. You are un-numbing. For years, your body has stored unprocessed experiences in your fascia, your organs, and your nervous system. As you clear the static, you are not adding new emotion — you are releasing old emotion trapped in your tissues for decades.
- What to do
- Do not analyze it. Do not fix it. Let it come through. Sit with it. Breathe into it. Thank it for holding on, and let it pass. This is not a breakdown. It is a breakthrough.
- Question 2
Hold on — my digestion is completely different. Is this normal?
- What it feels like
- Changes in bowel movements, looser stools, or increased frequency. You may feel bloated or gassy in the early days.
- What is happening
- When you switch to liquid nutrition, you give your digestive system its first real rest in years. The body seizes the opportunity to activate autophagy — a deep cellular recycling where it hunts down and consumes damaged cells, toxic buildup, and metabolic waste. What you are noticing is your body literally clearing house.
- What to do
- Hydrate. Rest. Trust that your body knows exactly what it is doing. This is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a sign that the old is leaving, making space for the new.
- Question 3
I feel like quitting and going back to what I know.
- What it feels like
- A strong pull toward old habits. Your mind is making a very convincing argument for why you should stop. The urge to abandon the process feels overwhelming.
- What is happening
- The ego equates familiarity with safety. Even if the familiar is toxic, it fights to stay in its comfort zone, because the unknown — even a better one — is terrifying to it. The urge to quit is not a sign that you are failing. It is the death rattle of the old self.
- What to do
- Acknowledge the fear. Say to yourself: “I am not quitting the process. I am quitting the old version of me.” And take one small step forward. Just one.
- Question 4
Wait, is this normal? I feel exhausted, nauseous, or achy.
- What it feels like
- Headaches, fatigue, skin breakouts, nausea, body aches. You may feel like you have a low-grade flu.
- What is happening
- Yes — this is normal. As your cells oscillate faster and release stored toxins, those toxins enter your bloodstream on their way out. This can create temporary discomfort. It is not a sign to stop. It is a sign that the work is working.
- What to do
- Rest. Hydrate. Be gentle with yourself. Your immune system is doing deep maintenance. This too shall pass.
- Question 5
How do I know if I am doing it right?
- What it feels like
- A sense of uncertainty. A nagging voice that wonders if you are “missing something” or “failing” at the process.
- What is happening
- You cannot do this wrong. There is no “right” way to feel and no “correct” pace. Some days you will do all of the practices; some days only one. The one thing you do is enough.
- What to do
- If you showed up to your breath, your stillness, or your intention today — even for a minute — you are doing it right.
- Question 6
What even is an 'ego death'? And how do I know if it's happening to me?
- What it feels like
- Confusion. A sense of not knowing who you are. Old fears — rejection, failure, loss of control — surfacing. You may feel like your identity is dissolving, leaving nothing to hold onto.
- What is happening
- The ego is not bad. It is the collection of stories, habits, and coping mechanisms you built to keep yourself safe. Ego death is not destruction — it is softening. Signs it is happening: a trigger that would have spiraled you a month ago is met with calm curiosity; an old repetitive voice grows quieter; heightened sensitivity to sound, environment, and other people’s energy; a quiet, steady hum in your chest that is not anxiety, but presence.
- What to do
- Do not fight the dissolution. It is the ego’s final roar. When the fear rises, simply observe it. Say: “I see you. I am not you. I am the awareness behind you.”
The Shift
When you notice something is shifting
As you move through the process, you begin to notice micro-shifts — the quiet signs that a new paradigm is forming inside you.
Space in the mind
The constant chatter begins to soften. There are moments of quiet.
A slower response
Instead of snapping, you pause. Instead of reacting, you respond.
New curiosity
You are drawn to things you used to dismiss — nature, silence, stillness.
Less need for distraction
The urge to scroll, to check, to escape feels less urgent.
A feeling of being held
Even in discomfort, you sense that you are safe.
A steadier center
The highs and lows level out. You return to yourself more quickly after being shaken.
Landing
What is on the other side
The discomfort you feel right now is not the destination. It is the tunnel. On the other side there is a version of you that is —
Sovereign
You no longer need external validation to feel secure.
Presence
You can sit in silence without needing to fill it.
Intuitive
You trust the quiet knowing in your chest more than the loud noise in your head.
Embodied
The constant tension you carried has softened into a quiet, steady hum.
You do not become a different person. You become more of who you have always been.
messy middle
When you are in the thick of it
When the journey feels heavy, return to these anchors.
Breathe
A single, slow, deep breath is enough to return to your center.
Name the feeling
Say: “I am feeling fear, grief, exhaustion.” Naming it removes its unconscious power over you.
Ask what it shows you
“What is this feeling trying to show me?” The discomfort is pointing you toward a wound ready to heal.
Remember you are not alone
This path has been walked before. And you are walking it now.

The Uncomfortable Art of Becoming
Growth is not meant to be comfortable. If it were, it would not be growth — it would be maintenance. The discomfort you feel right now is not a sign that you are doing something wrong. It is a sign that you are doing something brave.
You are stripping away layers that no longer serve you. You are letting the body release what it has held for decades. You are sitting with emotions that have been waiting for you to feel them. You are clearing the static so the signal of your truest self can finally come through.
This is not easy. But it is worth it. Keep going. You are not lost. You are clearing. And the clearing is leading you home.
You do not have to walk it alone.
